It’s been another big year for the property market in Canberra with plenty of new developments starting to pop up around our city or proposed plans put to the drawing board.
From townhouses on the former Australian Federal Police site in Weston Creek to high rises in the city, here are some of the developments set to change the face of the capital in 2018. Kingston Foreshore
A shake up is planned for Kingston foreshore with plans for a six-storey, 79-unit mixed commercial and residential development on one of its prime waterfront spots.
Canberra developer Keggins Homes bought the waterfront block at the foreshore’s peninsula precinct at an auction in June last year and paid $21.65 million for the 3697 square-metre site, the most expensive sale of land in the lakeside region.
Seventy-nine apartments are planned including two, three and four-bedroom apartments or townhouses. Sixteen penthouse apartments are also proposed. Weston Creek
Hundreds of new townhouses are set to be built as part of a new development on the site of the former Australian Federal Police complex in Weston Creek.
The more than $30 million project by property group Village Building Company will see the six-hectare site, which was used by the Australian Federal Police for forensic work until 2016, transformed into about 200 townhouses of two, three and four bedrooms. Canberra City
Construction of a $300 million mixed use development, adjacent to the ACT parliament, to house 1700 public servants, has commenced.
Constitution Place, will have 12 levels of commercial offices and be home to Adina Apartment Hotel Grand, a five-star hotel with 132 rooms over four levels.
The Snow family’s company and owner of the Canberra Airport, Capital Property Group, won the tender to build the government office block.
Up to 252 new homes will be built on Red Hill’s public housing precinct, a redevelopment that locals say could make or break the inner south.
The 53,002 square metre site bounded by La Perouse Street and Monaro and Cygnet Crescents could see up to 26 detached houses, 82 terrace houses with separate titles and between 83 and 144 units.
The public housing precinct is one of 13 being sold off and redeveloped as part of the federal government’s asset recycling program.
A multi-building precinct is planned for the Dickson Motor Vehicle Registry site as part of the continued renewal of the Northbourne Avenue corridor.
The 16,000-square-metre slice of land, which fronts Challis Street and backs on to the city’s leading thoroughfare, will encompass four buildings, including a six-storey tower with 13,000 square metres of office space.
The plans also include a 90-place childcare centre to service the new offices and surrounding area, plus public open spaces.
The ACT Labor Club has been given the green light for a hotel development next to the club in Belconnen.
The club plans to demolish two buildings on the corner of Cameron Avenue and Chandler Street in Belconnen, and replace them with a 12-storey building.
The $29.6 million development on the 1530-square-metre site will feature restaurant and commercial space on the ground floor, four levels of podium car parking, five levels of hotel suites and two levels of commercial or office space on the top two floors.
There’s plenty planned for Gungahlin, with plans for an 18-storey mixed use site with 296 residential units, commercial ground level use and space for 390 cars proposed.
Developer Empire Global had originally planned for a 26th-floor podium connecting two towers at the corner of Gozzard Street and Gundaroo Drive but concerns were raised after a meeting with the Gungahlin Community Council.
Childcare centres were concerned about the potential for overlooking of playgrounds, overshadowing, traffic and safety.
Another proposal will see an eighth floor open-air pool be the standout feature for the Ruby Gungahlin developmemt.
It will consist of two residential towers ranging from 14 to 18 storeys with shared spaces including a 20-metre restor-style pool, residents’ gymnasium and alfresco entertaining area.
The development will be built on a vacant block of land located on the corner of Gribble Street and Anthony Rolfe Avenue. The development application was lodged in late 2016 and approved earlier this year.
Canberra City Circle
And finally, a new attraction for Canberra’s City Circle. Construction is underway for a 14-storey 200-unit apartment block on London Circuit.
Developer Crafted promises “a grand New York style entrance”, with 2.7 metre ceilings, oak floors and use of stone inside.
Chief Minister Andrew Barr said he wanted more people living in the CBD and if more people were to live there transport in the city would be improved.
