Breakups, huh? They are the worst. It’s a death of sorts, and requires proper grieving, especially if, like Lena Dunham, and Jack Antonoff, who broke up in December, there was an expectation you were going to spend the rest of your lives together, and have babies.
According to Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, there are six or seven stages of grief, and they’re not necessarily linear. Shock and or disbelief, denial, bargaining, anger, depression, and finally acceptance.
Which is why we feel you, Lena, when you tell people you’re still wearing the ring Jack gave you.

“I’m wearing this ring that Jack gave me and I’ll always wear it,” Dunham told her followers on her Instagram stories. “Because love is a really cool, powerful, eternal thing and it doesn’t have to be defined the way we in Western culture define it as beginnings and ends.”
Oh girl! We have so been there! I mean, just because you no longer share a bed doesn’t mean you can’t go on loving each other, right? And how does love just stop? Western culture is just so limiting with all of its labels!
What is the word for “So in love but just can’t go on like this.”? See, there isn’t one!
Where are our Rumi poems? This is a personal emergency.
“Things can be ‘you’re a drop of water and you re-enter the ocean,” Dunham, 30, continued, paraphrasing Rumi.
That’s right, that is exactly right — love is water, with no beginning or end. Particularly if you had expectations just two months ago, as Lena did, that Jack was going to propose.
It was five years. That’s not nothing! You guys lived together! Legally? OK, legally? You were married.
We can’t even imagine right now a future without Jack in it.
Please do not talk to us about Jack possibly moving on, or even having a life that exists, OK? Because we are all so fragile. Let’s just hold each other in our hearts; let’s hold space, let’s post a few inspirational quotes to Instagram about not crying because it’s over, but smiling because it happened.
Actually, Dunham did post an inspirational quote to Instagram, “Starting over is that beautiful moment where you choose yourself”. Right on, sister. You will in no way regret any of this, because it’s all part of the process. And one day – trust me – one day, when you meet someone new, you’ll smile at the wonder of it all, babe, and know it was the right path for you.
